At Gardner Street, all students receive a musical education that emphasizes traditional skills (including understanding rhythms and reading notes) and the ability to make music in equal measure.
This approach helps children develop social skills associated with a well-rounded education — self-discipline, concentration, perseverance — and allows them to experience the joy that comes from listening to music and learning how to express themselves through music.
Twice a week, kindergarteners through 2nd graders engage in vocal work, percussion and Orff instruments while 3rd through 6th graders add recorders to their lessons. Beginning in 3rd grade, students have the option of joining choir or Orff ensemble (4th and 5th graders also have the option of joining Recorder ensemble) which they study during an additional weekly lesson.
Students perform in shows throughout the year, including school-wide Winter and Spring Music Concerts.
