Dear Gardner families,
The end of summer means school is starting and we’ll soon be seeing a lot of each other. While I’m going to miss the ease and joys of summer, I’m also full of expectation for what we will accomplish this year. Welcome to the 2017 – 2018 school year!
Over the last few weeks we have had a steady stream of parents enrolling students and teachers preparing their rooms for another great year of teaching and learning. Everyone is abuzz with nervous excitement and looking forward to welcoming our students and families into our school and classrooms.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Friends of Gardner and parents’ generosity, we are fortunate to be able to continue to provide our art, music, garden, and physical education programs for another year. We have been refining things to improve these programs and I’m pleased to announce that we have added a third day each week to our garden program and are adding 12 weekly yoga classes to students’ physical education schedules.
Our mission at Gardner includes providing students with a school experience that integrates the arts, experiences in the natural world, movement, and rigorous academic instruction delivered by teachers engaged in constant professional growth. I’m happy to report that our current scores on the annual Smarter Balanced Assessment demonstrate yet again that we are headed in the right direction and utilizing research based approaches that yield outstanding results.
Because we are committed to students’ lives in and out of school, our staff has collaborated to craft a developmentally appropriate and research based approach to homework that allows students to engage in other types of activities after school. As a result, homework will not be assigned this year. Instead, as we work to help children become active readers, writers, and problem solvers, students will be encouraged to read for pleasure and be inspired writers and problem solvers. You’ll hear more about our policies from teachers at Back to School Night on September 7th from 4pm to 6pm.
School begins Tuesday, August 15, 2017 and like all Tuesdays dismissal is at 1:43pm. On all other days dismissal is at 2:43pm. Our morning bell rings at 8:15am. Students arriving to class after 8:20am will be marked tardy and must report to the main office. Kids should have a small, lightweight backpack, snack and lunch (or money for the cafeteria). Please take the time to read the back to school packet and return the requested forms this week.
Welcome back to school Gardner families!
